There are a number of reasons for the success of South African hake producers: they have succeeded in positioning Cape hake as a premium groundfish species, the government regulator has done a good job of managing the fishery, and MSC Chain of Custody certification has allowed producers to develop new markets in northern Europe and North America where MSC certification is strongly recognised and valued.
Approximately 67% of the South African hake catch is exported. The main export markets are in Europe, Australia and the United States.
The local market for hake is highly competitive. Branded, portioned and packaged hake products predominate.
