President Thabo Mbeki has signed the Act that enables the Regulatory Division of the SABS to become a new separate statutory entity of the Department of Trade and Industry. The Act thus transfers the Regulatory Division and all regulatory functions of the SABS to a new statutory Department, it is called the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS).

The new Act also provides for the transfer of all employees in the SABS Regulatory Division to the NRCS, together with relevant regulations, including compulsory specifications, agreements, assets and obligations.
